Other things to watch for at the NBA Draft

  • Be primed for trades as the NBA Draft approaches. Last season, The Portland Trail Blazers, Minnesota Timberwolves and Boston Celtics made a big trade, where the Blazers received Brandon Roy, the Wolves received Randy Foye and the Celtics received Sebastian Telfair.
  • Why did your favorite player fall so low in the draft after having a great college career? Remember that a lot factors into a player's draft stock. "Upside" or potential has a lot to do with it. In 2006, for instance, many thought Duke University guard J.J. Redick should have been drafted higher because of the great college season he had. Yet, scouts discovered that he lacked a lot of other skills on the court aside from shooting. Moreover, his lack of size (he's only about 6-4) made him less coveted by NBA teams.
  • Listen closely between picks to hear numerous NBA off season rumors being spilled by analysts.
  • When a player is drafted, pay close attention to that player's height and weight. Often, a player's height and weight might be exaggerated. For instance, Charles Barkley was always listed as 6-6, but he was really closer to 6-4. Larry Johnson was always listed at 6-7, but he was really more like 6-5. Bill Walton was listed as a 7-footer when he was really 6-10. Before the draft, the league takes official measurements of players and after they are selected, their true height and weight are revealed to the half inch and pound.
